Prof. (Dr.) R. Venkata Rao is the Vice Chancellor of the National Law School of India University, Bangalore. His academic qualifications are B.A. (Hons.) Litt., M.A. (Litt), M.L., and Ph.D and LL.D (Honoris Causa) 2017-Utkal University. Prof. (Dr.) Rao has served for 31 years in the Faculty of Law at Andhra University in various capacities as the Dean, Faculty of Law, Principal, University College of Law; Chairman, Board of Studies in Law; and Head of the Department of Law. Prof. (Dr.) Rao’s primary area of research is Human Rights, Humanitarian Law, and Criminal Justice.

Prof. (Dr.) Rao has the distinction of receiving the Best Teacher Award from the Government of Andhra Pradesh in 2006, the Best Researcher Award from Andhra University in 2003, and a Gold Medal for the Best Ph.D. Thesis. He has also been awarded the Best Vice Chancellor Award for Outstanding Contribution to Education during the World Chancellors and Vice Chancellor’s Congress- 2014 held on June 27, 2014 at Mumbai. Amity University, Noida, awarded Amity Academic Excellence Award for the most distinguished contribution towards the propagation of doctrine of knowledge.

Prof. (Dr.) Rao served as Chairman, Board of Governors, Asian Law Institute (ASLI) in 2010-2011 and has been an Independent Director in prestigious Public Sector Undertakings like: Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL), Bangalore; Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL), Bangalore; and Goa Shipyard Ltd, Goa, and also Member, Board of Governors, Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs (IICA), New Delhi. He is also a Member of Legal Education Committee, Curriculum Development Committee, and the Equivalence Committee of the Bar Council of India.
