However, as India pushes on all fronts to occupy pride of place in the world, it cannot afford to ignore the key geopolitical undercurrents driving business and governance across the globe.

For starters, we are moving from a US-dominated to a multipolar world partly due to the growth in emerging economies and partly due to inequality and political discontent in developed markets. This will result in intensely higher levels of complexity for businesses spanning the globe. Secondly, Western democratic models are being challenged by alternative political systems that have proved more resilient and less fractious while tackling global challenges. Thirdly, the 4th Industrial Revolution is well upon us, and its formidable combination of big data, analytics and technology promises to disrupt not only global business but also our world order. These major shifts are manifesting themselves in developments such as the corroding relations between USA and China, internal and external challenges to the unity and stability of the European Union (EU), and a move towards evolution and not revolution in global trade relations, among others.

Deepak Jacob is currently the President and General Counsel of Star India, which is one of India’s largest Multinational Television Broadcasting companies.Star currently broadcasts over 40 channels in 8 languages across India and over 100 countries worldwide.His role at Star is unique since it encompasses not just the legal and compliance functions but also the regulatory, government affairs and public policy functions thus covering the entire gamut of the risk landscape.

In his decade long career at Star, Deepak has been at the forefront of driving pioneering legal regulatory and policy initiatives that have not only changed the landscape of broadcasting in India but also ensured the success and profitability of Star’s business. One such initiative was the pan India transformation of the entire analogue TV market to digital, encrypted conditional access TV enabled through legislative mandate that helped unlock value for the entire broadcast ecosystem while delivering high quality pay TV services to consumers along with variety and choice. Deepak has also been a strong believer in the freedom of speech and expression and to that end was part of a Joint Task Force between the private sector and the government that laid down a policy for creating a quasi-government self-regulatory mechanism called Broadcast Content Complaint Council (BCCC), a system established for self- regulating the TV content.

He has also been at the forefront of some of the biggest acquisitions of sports rights, movies, TV channels, sports leagues etc. deals in India which have helped growing Star’s portfolio. As the General Counsel of Star he is also tasked with assessing and ring fencing the company from domestic and global risk arising from various legal, policy, regulatory, governance issues and even geo-political changes. As part of his Government & Industry relations portfolio, he was instrumental in laying the foundation for mutual trust and cooperation and enabling dialogue between the Industry, Government & the Regulators.

An alumnus of University of Madras, he is a seasoned lawyer with rich and varied work experience of over 25 years. His areas of expertise are in the fields of IPR, competition law, commercial and contractual transactions, property laws, litigation, and regulatory matters. He has sector specific experience across media, telecom, sports and e-commerce industries.
